Christina Freeman
An NYC-based contemporary artist contacted Flatpage for assistance with her artist’s statement and teaching application materials.
Project Background
Christina Freeman is a New York–based contemporary artist whose work bridges installations, conceptual art, and social practice. She has exhibited widely, in addition to participating in the Bronx Museum’s Artist in the Marketplace program and teaching in Hunter College’s studio art program.
I have taught students how to write artist’s statements for several years and somehow I still found it so difficult to write one that properly encompassed my own creative practice. Flatpage’s evaluation of my statement helped me to get out of my own way.

The artist sought out the help of the editors at Flatpage as she was preparing a new artist’s statement to showcase her work and applications for further teaching positions. Flatpage’s editors helped her to strengthen the texts she uses to describe her practice and put her best foot forward in her cover letter and teaching statements.
The Collaboration
While the artist had already used her current artist’s statement for some time, she felt that it needed work in order to more accurately and effectively describe her current practice. Additionally, she needed different versions—one short and one long—to use for different applications and sought advice on what information was most essential to include.
During the evaluation process, Flatpage’s editor reviewed the artist’s CV and provided feedback on ways she could strengthen her statement draft based on her intended audience and goals. During their 30-minute virtual call, they reviewed the suggestions in real time and the editor responded to questions.
I finally have an artist’s statement that I can work with and modify for a range of different opportunities. I also had a fantastic experience working with Flatpage’s editor on my cover letter and teaching philosophy. She helped me tailor my writing to the specifics of the job call.
For further feedback on her cover letter and other application materials, the artist took part in a coaching call with a developmental editor and coach on the Flatpage team who is a former art department chairperson.
I really valued getting feedback from a neutral party who has been on hiring committees and understands the conversations that take place at the administrative level.
The Outcome
The artist was so pleased with the work done by the Flatpage team that she helped facilitate artist’s statement workshops with the other art students at Hunter College. Freeman teaches at Hunter College, CUNY for the Department of Art & Art History, the Department of Film & Media, and Macaulay Honors College.
After making the changes to my materials, I had a much stronger application that accurately reflects my unique teaching style and art practice. Within a week of submitting the application I had an invitation to interview!
