Contract Positions
Bilingual Arabic-English Copyeditor (Academic & General Nonfiction) (Active)
Are you a qualified copyeditor who wants to focus more on editing academic and nonfiction manuscripts and less on project management and client interaction? Flatpage is seeking experienced bilingual Arabic-English copyeditors to join our team as ongoing contractors!
We are a growing business with an active, enthusiastic team of current and former academics, writers, and experienced editors. As an editor with us, you can expect to see academic and nonfiction book, chapter, and journal manuscripts in the arts, humanities, and social sciences; institutional publications and didactics, such as museum catalogues and exhibition materials; and texts written by artists and other creatives. Typical workload is about 5-15 hours per week, fluctuating seasonally. Most of our projects come in last-minute so you must have regular availability; we do not usually book editors in advance. Our team has active, regular discussion using a platform called Basecamp, which you will be expected to participate in.
Ideal candidate(s) will be subject-area specialists with professional experience in copyediting and proofreading journal articles, book manuscripts, nonfiction essays, and organizational materials written by authors in art and cultural history, film and performance studies, and critical thought. This is a contract position, where the editor will be offered projects on an as-needed basis, based on their interests and availability.
At this time, we are unable to train candidates to perform the duties related to this position. Therefore we are only seeking candidates who have previously completed professional training and worked with clients.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Graduate degree (MA, PhD) in the humanities or social sciences, languages, or journalism
- Full professional bilingual in both the original language and English with the ability to edit in both languages and provide comments in the original language; expert-level background in grammar and mechanics of US and UK English and the original language (first-language level)
- Certificate in copyediting from an accredited program
- Minimum 3-5 years professional copyediting experience
- Experience working with nonfiction and academic manuscripts, e.g., academic books, museum exhibition catalogues, and trade nonfiction publications
- Knowledge of the conventions and processes of the publishing industry
- Expertise in the Chicago Manual of Style (18th ed.) or APA style, including reference citations; online access to these databases is a must
- Expertise in IJMES, ALA-LC, and other transliterations systems
- Technical skills in editing and commenting on manuscripts using Microsoft Word’s track changes, as well as the ability to use a style sheet
- Technical skills in proofreading manuscripts using Adobe Acrobat, including the Commenting features
- Ability to work under pressure and time constraints
- Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm to join a growing team

We are a growing business with an active, enthusiastic team of current and former academics, writers, editors, and publishing professionals. As an indexer with us, you can expect to work on academic and nonfiction books in the arts, humanities, and social sciences; museum exhibition catalogues; institutional publications; and books written by scholars, artists, and other creative professionals. Typical workload fluctuates seasonally and is based on project volume. Most projects are assigned on a relatively short timeline, so candidates must maintain regular availability and be comfortable working with deadlines. The ideal candidate will possess:
- Graduate degree (MA, PhD preferred) in the humanities or social sciences
- Formal training in indexing through a recognized indexing program, professional society, or equivalent professional development
- Minimum 3-5 years of professional indexing experience
- An active roster of indexing clients and an established independent indexing practice
- Experience creating indexes for academic books, museum catalogues, scholarly edited volumes, and trade nonfiction publications
- Strong subject-matter familiarity with disciplines such as history, art history, cultural studies, literature, media studies, anthropology, sociology, political science, and related fields
- Knowledge of publishing workflows and the role of indexing within the book production process
- Proficiency with professional indexing software, such as Cindex, SkyIndex, or Macrex
- Ability to interpret publisher instructions and style requirements

Hours and Compensation
We need indexers with regular availability who are willing to take projects that arise on relatively short notice. Compensation is generally based on the length and complexity of the manuscript. Typical rates begin at approximately $3.00 per indexable page, with adjustments made based on schedule and project requirements.
