Flatpage Statement on Artificial Intelligence

Flatpage believes the greatest value we offer our clients is human thought. Our artificial intelligence policy explains how we protect client privacy, preserve authorial voice, maintain editorial integrity, and use AI and automation responsibly across our business.

Our Philosophy

At Flatpage, our artificial intelligence policy begins with a simple principle: We believe that the greatest value we offer our clients is human thought.

Ideas, critical thinking, creativity, judgment, and expertise cannot be automated. Whether we are editing a manuscript, developing thought leadership, or publishing a book, our work exists to elevate the voice of the human author.

We believe that every writer deserves an editor who reads thoughtfully, thinks critically, and engages with their work as another human being. Likewise, we believe readers deserve writing that reflects genuine expertise, lived experience, and original thinking.

Technology has an important role to play in supporting our work, but it should never replace genuine intellectual labor. For this reason, Flatpage maintains clear policies governing the use of artificial intelligence across our business.

Definitions

The terms “artificial intelligence” and “automation” are often used interchangeably, but they describe different technologies and different uses.

Generative AI

Generative AI (GenAI) refers to large language models (LLMs) and related technologies, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and similar systems. These tools generate new text, summarize information, answer questions, draft content, and assist with research based on patterns learned from large datasets.

These systems can be valuable assistants for certain business functions, but they also present important limitations and risks, including:

  • Privacy and confidentiality concerns
  • Copyright and intellectual property questions
  • Unreliable source attribution
  • Factual inaccuracies and hallucinations
  • Writing that lacks an author’s individual voice and perspective

For these reasons, Flatpage uses GenAI selectively and only under human oversight. GenAI is never used as part of our editorial work.

Automation

Automation is different.

Automation refers to software or workflows that perform repetitive tasks according to predefined rules. Editorial, publishing, and translation industries have relied on automation for decades. Examples include workflow management, file conversion, translation memories, quality assurance checks, scheduling, notifications, document routing, and other process efficiencies.

These tools do not create original ideas or replace editorial judgment. Instead, they reduce repetitive administrative work so our team can devote more time to thoughtful, high-quality editorial and publishing services.

At Flatpage, we embrace automation where it improves efficiency without compromising quality.

Human Editorial Services and Generative AI

Our editorial services are built on human expertise.

Editors employed or contracted by Flatpage do not use GenAI to edit client work.

This means our editors do not:

  • Upload client manuscripts or documents to GenAI platforms
  • Ask GenAI systems to rewrite client writing
  • Use GenAI to generate editorial feedback
  • Use GenAI-generated text as part of the editing process

Every Flatpage editor agrees to these standards in writing.

We maintain this policy for several reasons. First, client confidentiality and privacy are fundamental to our work. Second, we believe every author’s voice is unique. Editorial work should strengthen that voice—not replace it with language generated from statistical patterns that exist somewhere on the internet.

Finally, we recognize that current GenAI systems cannot reliably verify sources, distinguish original thought from reproduced material, or consistently preserve nuance, style, and scholarly integrity. Human editors remain essential to producing thoughtful, ethical, and intellectually rigorous work.

AI in Publishing

Our approach to AI in publishing is rooted in protecting the integrity of authorship and ensuring that nonfiction reflects the author’s genuine expertise, research, analysis, and original thinking.

Authors publishing through Flatpage Press and Flatpage Studio are expected to disclose whether GenAI was used during the writing process and, where applicable, how it was used.

For nonfiction works—including both academic and trade publications—we do not support the use of GenAI to generate substantive written content that is presented as the author’s own original work. (See some common do’s and don’ts here.)

We believe nonfiction should reflect each author’s knowledge, expertise, research, analysis, and original thinking.

Technology may assist with administrative or research-related tasks, but authorship belongs to the individual whose ideas and scholarship are being presented.

AI in Business Operations

While GenAI is not used in our editorial work, we do use it selectively to support internal business functions.

This includes:

Marketing and SEO

We use GenAI to support keyword research, SEO optimization, website copy ideation, and improving discoverability so authors can more easily find us.

Marketing Content

GenAI may assist with brainstorming social media ideas, caption variations, campaign concepts, and marketing angles. All outputs are reviewed and refined by our team.

Research

We may use GenAI to support preliminary research for meetings, prospective partners, webinar and blog topics, and podcast guests. Human judgment remains essential, and no decisions are made based solely on GenAI-generated outputs.

Internal Business Materials

GenAI may assist in drafting or ideating proposals, presentations, sales materials, and planning documents. All final materials are reviewed and approved by Flatpage staff before publication or use.

Blogs, Educational Content, and Thought Leadership

Flatpage produces blogs, articles, guides, e-books, newsletters, and other educational resources.

These publications reflect the expertise, experience, and perspectives of our leadership and subject-matter experts.

GenAI may assist with:

  • Preliminary research
  • Organizing information
  • Outlining content
  • Identifying supporting resources
  • Suggesting alternative wording during drafting

However, the ideas, arguments, editorial direction, and final voice always originate from our executive and management team and are refined by human writers and editors.

We believe thought leadership must communicate genuine human insight rather than machine-generated content.

Our Commitment

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, but it is not a substitute for human creativity, judgment, or expertise.

At Flatpage, we believe technology should amplify human work.

We will continue to evaluate emerging technologies thoughtfully and responsibly while remaining committed to the principles that define our company:

  • Protecting client privacy
  • Preserving authorial voice
  • Promoting original human ideas
  • Maintaining editorial integrity
  • Using technology ethically and transparently

Our clients trust us because they value thoughtful human collaboration. That trust remains at the center of everything we do.
