Writing Coaching
When you need expert guidance before you begin or throughout the writing process.
What Is Writing Coaching?
Writing coaching provides personalized guidance throughout the writing process, helping you move from idea to finished manuscript with confidence. Unlike editing, which focuses on revising a completed draft, writing coaching supports you while you’re still developing your ideas, refining your argument, or working through revisions.
Our writing coaching services are designed for academics and nonfiction authors working on journal articles and long-form nonfiction books. Through one-on-one sessions, your coach provides strategic feedback, accountability, and practical advice tailored to your project and goals. Whether you’re outlining your first chapter, responding to peer reviewer comments, or struggling to maintain momentum, we’re here to help you keep moving forward.
Book Coaching
Writing a book is a long-term project that benefits from ongoing feedback, accountability, and strategic guidance. Whether you’re developing your first proposal or revising later chapters, a writing coach can help you clarify your ideas, strengthen your structure, and maintain momentum from concept to completed manuscript.
We work with academics writing books for university presses as well as writers and researchers developing trade nonfiction for a broader audience. Whether your goal is to publish a scholarly monograph, translate research for the public, or establish yourself as a thought leader, your coach will help you shape a compelling manuscript while staying focused on your publishing goals.
Throughout the coaching process, you’ll receive personalized feedback, practical strategies, and regular accountability to help you overcome obstacles and continue making progress.
Journal Article Coaching
Publishing a journal article requires more than presenting strong research. Your manuscript must make a clear contribution to the scholarly conversation, meet the expectations of your target journal, and communicate your ideas effectively. Writing coaching provides individualized support throughout this process, from developing an initial outline to preparing your article for submission.
Whether you’re writing your first journal article, revising a manuscript after peer review, or adapting a conference paper for publication, your coach will help you strengthen your argument, improve organization, and develop a strategy for moving your manuscript forward. We work with faculty, researchers, graduate students, and independent scholars across disciplines, providing practical guidance that complements—not replaces—editorial review.
Together, we’ll identify challenges, set achievable milestones, and build a sustainable writing process that helps you publish with greater confidence.
Who Benefits from Writing Coaching?
Our writing coaching services are designed for writers who need ongoing guidance while developing their ideas, organizing their manuscripts, or navigating the publishing process. Whether you’re writing your first book or preparing a journal article for submission, coaching provides personalized support tailored to your goals.
Develop scholarly books for university presses, write journal articles, strengthen research arguments, and navigate the academic publishing process with the support of an experienced writing coach.
Plan, draft, and revise trade nonfiction, educational books, policy books, thought leadership, and other long-form nonfiction manuscripts while receiving regular feedback and accountability.
When Should You Get Writing Coaching?
Writing coaching is most valuable before your manuscript is complete. If you’re still developing your ideas, organizing your argument, or working through early drafts, coaching provides the guidance and accountability needed to keep your project moving forward. Rather than evaluating a finished manuscript, your coach works alongside you as your writing evolves.
Writing coaching is a good fit when you are:
- Developing a book proposal or planning a nonfiction book.
- Writing an academic book for a university press.
- Drafting or revising a journal article for publication.
- Responding to peer reviewer feedback.
- Struggling with organization, momentum, or writer’s block.
- Looking for accountability throughout the writing process.
Once you’ve completed a full draft, developmental editing is often the next step. If you’re unsure which service best fits your project, we’re happy to help you decide.
Our Approach to Writing Coaching
Writing is rarely a linear process, and every project presents different opportunities and challenges. That’s why we tailor our coaching to your goals, your writing process, and your publishing ambitions. Whether you’re developing an academic book, preparing a journal article, or writing a trade nonfiction manuscript, your coach provides personalized guidance that evolves as your project progresses.
Rather than offering one-size-fits-all advice, we focus on helping you solve the challenges that matter most to your work. Together, we’ll clarify ideas, develop strategies for overcoming obstacles, establish achievable milestones, and maintain momentum between sessions.
Our coaching is collaborative, practical, and focused on long-term success. In addition to helping you complete your current project, we aim to strengthen your confidence and writing process so you’re better equipped for future publications.

Sample Coaching Report
While we cannot schedule a full sample coaching session, you will be able to meet the coach beforehand to see if you’re a good fit. After each meeting, we’ll provide you with a coaching report that summarizes what you discussed and next steps.

Writing Coaching vs. Developmental Editing
Writing coaching and developmental editing both focus on the big picture of your writing, but they serve different purposes. Writing coaching supports you while you’re developing your ideas and drafting your manuscript. Developmental editing provides an in-depth evaluation of a completed draft, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for revision.
Writing Coaching
Ongoing guidance throughout the writing process
Develop ideas, arguments, and structure as you write
Multiple coaching sessions with personalized support
Accountability and writing strategies to maintain momentum
Best for works in progress
Developmental Editing
Comprehensive review of a completed draft
Evaluate the organization, content, and effectiveness of your manuscript
One-time editorial assessment with recommendations for revision
Detailed editorial feedback to guide your next revision
Best for manuscripts that are substantially complete
If you’re still developing your ideas or actively writing, coaching will provide the ongoing support you need to keep making progress. If you’ve completed a draft and are ready for comprehensive editorial feedback, developmental editing is likely the better next step. If you’re unsure which service is right for your project, we’re happy to review your goals and recommend the best approach.
Pricing & Packages
Writing coaching is tailored to each writer, so costs depend on how many sessions you’ll need and how long you’d like to work with a coach. Some authors benefit from a single targeted session to refine a book proposal, strengthen a journal article, or work through a specific challenge. Others choose ongoing support throughout the writing process. We offer single sessions as well as 6-session and 12-session coaching packages, so you can select the level of guidance that fits your project, timeline, and budget. Whether you’re looking for focused feedback or a longer-term coaching relationship, you’ll find an option that meets your needs.
- One session: $225
- Six sessions: $1,215
- Twelve sessions: $2,430
What Does Writing Coaching Include?
Every coaching relationship is tailored to your individual goals. A brief introductory call helps you get to know your coach, discuss your project, and determine whether the coaching relationship is a good fit.
Each session includes up to one hour of advance reading or preparation (such as reviewing a book chapter, journal article draft, proposal, or outline), a recorded 60-minute Zoom session, and a brief written summary outlining key discussion points and recommended next steps.
If your coaching session extends beyond 60 minutes, additional time is billed at $75 per hour in 15-minute increments. Additional reading or research outside the standard session is also billed at $75 per hour. (For reference, coaches typically review approximately 10,000–15,000 words per hour.) Editorial services, including developmental editing and manuscript editing, are quoted separately.
